I look at the early shots especially and consider how the 'Western' view of masculinity has evolved in the past 100 years ago. At least how said view has evolved in the market-place where images are still basically set and controlled by big stupid men (except for fashion designers I guess). Nowadays he would be considered a gay icon, wouldn't he? At least he certainly would have done 30-35 years back. He looks like Bowie did during his prime years (think 'Let's Dance,' the 'Thin White Duke' etc). Strictly androgynous and oh those bedroom eyes.
Guess there is no mystery as to where David found his inspiration is there? All those mysterious troubled Great Gatsby guys had a bit of this look about them.
