XTC "Sgt. Rock (is going to help me) 1980 on "Top of the Pops"

"Sgt. Rock (Is going to help me)", from the 1980 XTC release, "Black Sea".

"Generals and Majors", from the 1980 XTC release, "Black Sea".  Look closely, Richard Branson of Virgin Records has a cameo as one of the generals.

XTC 1980 "Black Sea"

Ooooo....let's get aboard the way back machine....all the way back to 1980. This was a top album for me that year...hell...still is. XTC....."Black Sea". Oh, the memories.  Released on September 12, 1980, it spawned five singles - "Generals And Majors", "Towers Of London", "Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me)","Love At First Sight", and "Respectable Street". I still think it's one of the more consistent albums by XTC, it's not as raw as the previous album Drums and Wires, but it's still totally all about the big drums and sharp guitars. This was one of those albums I just nearly wore out.....it was on my turntable constantly. I'd been an obsessive Beatles über-fan since childhood....and XTC was one of the first groups that I felt I could honestly call "Beatlesque", in their approach to writing pop songs that felt fresh, original, and loaded with memorable hooks. American XTC fans were an odd lot. Punk, new wave, and other alternative pop didn't get major airplay in the US at all. It seemed that most of the XTC fans that I knew were cut from a different cloth that most other fans of the British music that was being released in those years......usually a little broader in their musical tastes and outlook...sometimes even a bit snobbish about what they were into. This album has aged well. I feel that every cut still stands on it's own. It always ends up near the top of my favourite LPs of the era....and not just because of the memories it brings back to me. Give it a listen....if it's new to you, excellent. If you remember it....listen again.....it is sooo worth the time.....Enjoy.

1967 Bobbie Gentry "Ode to Billie Joe"

Just an outstanding debut album all around!....I had to post Bobbie Gentry's 1967 debut, "Ode to Billie Joe". Everyone knows the title cut, I'm sure, but the rest of the album carries along the same Mississippi Delta vibe quite nicely as well. All the songs were written by her, but "Niki Hoeky". She didn't have a major recorded output, but everything she did was excellent, and very original. Even her duets with Glen Campbell were exceptional, IMHO. She still seems under appreciated, and should get more attention than for just "Ode".....this is a great release...enjoy.

Here's the link:

Here's the track list:

Mississippi Delta
I Saw an Angel Die
Chickasaw County Child

A little more Ms. Gentry....Oh, hell, I'll just post the album in a few....lol

Nothin' to say here, but.......ENJOY!! ;)

A Bobbie Gentry break.... :D!!!!

Just in the mood for some Bobbie Gentry....like there's ever a bad time to be in the mood for Ms. Gentry....lol

"Red Guitar" David Sylvian 1984

One of my favourite songs from the album, here is the promo video for David Sylvian's "Red Guitar", from 1984. The first single from David's debut album "Brilliant Trees", the video features legendary photographer Angus McBean (part of the video is based on one of his photographs)and was directed by Anton Corbijn.

David Sylvian 1984-"Brilliant Trees"

Today I am posting an album that has been a long time favourite. I was a huge fan of the band, Japan. Later, when David Sylvian started doing collaborative and solo work, I have continued following and enjoying his work. His first solo recording, following the breakup of Japan, is the 1984, "Brilliant Trees". Coming not long after of one of Japan's best albums, the 1982 "Tin Drum", this is quite a stylistic departure from their sound. This has been an album that never gets tired for me...I return to it over and over again. I've been listening to it again lately, quite often....so here it is....enjoy.

The Buddy Johnson Orchestra collection......

The Buddy Johnson Orchestra was one of the most popular R&B based bands during the immediate post war years. With his sister Ella seductively serving for decades as his primary vocalist, pianist Buddy Johnson led a large jump blues band that enjoyed tremendous success during the 1940s and '50s, visiting the R&B charts often for Decca with "Let's Beat Out Some Love," "Baby Don't You Cry," the chart-topping "When My Man Comes Home," and "That's the Stuff You Gotta Watch." The bandleader spotlighted a series of talented singers, including balladeers Arthur Prysock, Nolan Lewis, and Floyd Ryland, but it was Ella's understated delivery rendering of a Buddy Johnson original tune that would become an American standard, "Since I Fell For You" in 1945, and Buddy's crisply danceable "Walk-Em Rhythm" that made the aggregation so successful for so long. With a string of hit records, memorable vocals, and great original music charts, the Buddy Johnson band was one of the big attractions of the time. They were as popular at the Savoy Ballroom in New York as the Savoy in Los Angeles. They drew sellout crowds in Houston,Atlanta, and Chicago as well as Kansas City.  Buddy moved over to Mercury Records in 1953 and scored more smashes with Ella's "Hittin' on Me" and "I'm Just Your Fool," the latter a 1954 standout that was later covered by  Chicago harpist Little Walter.  Rock & roll eventually halted Buddy Johnson's momentum, but his band (tenor saxophonist Purvis Henson was a constant presence in the reed section) kept recording for Mercury through 1958, switched to Roulette the next year, and bowed out with a solitary session for Hy Weiss' Old Town label in 1964.

Here is a compilation that I've put together from most of their recorded output. This is a true labour of love, as they have been one of my favourite groups for years. My mom is a major fan of Ella, and so I'm putting this up today for her.....hope you enjoy it.

This is in three files. Here are the links:

Part I:     http://www.4shared.com/file/XIlSpc7F/johnson.html
Part II:    http://www.4shared.com/file/wpIDrBxW/2johnson.html
Part III:   http://www.4shared.com/file/pCJb9AqR/johnson3.html

Here are the tracks:

I.
I don't want nobody
Please Mr. Johnson
Bring it home to me
I wonder who's boogying
A pretty girl
I ain't mad with you
Any Day now
Let's beat out some love
Oh! baby don't you know

So good
A-12
Shake 'em up
Dr. Jive jives
Shufflin' and rollin'
Hittin' on me
I don't care who knows
Did you see Jackie Robinson hit that ball?

II.
Rockin' time
Doot doot dow
They don't want me to rock no more
Boogie woogie's mother-in-law
Opus Two
Rock on!
Ain't cha got me where ya want me
You'll get them blues
Buddy's boogie
It's obdacious
You'd better believe me
I still love you
That's the stuff you gotta watch
Gone walkin'
Walk 'em

III.
Walk the chalk line
South Main
You got it made
Hey, sweet potato
Crazy 'bout a saxophone
When my man comes home
'Lil dog
Ain't but one
You can't tell who's lovin' who
Bitter sweet
Down yonder
I'm just your fool
Since I fell for you
(Gotta go) upside your head
Baby, you're always on my mind
You'll get them blues
I'm gonna jump in the river

A bit of a delay this week on postings.....

My apologies for the delay in posting any tunes so far this week......I'm recovering from a hospitalization due to my allergies getting out of control, and resulting in a wicked case of bronchitis. I'm also in the middle of appraising, researching, listing, and pricing a massive amount of antiques, collectibles and furniture for an estate sale to be held this weekend......mama has to buy groceries, etc....and work in the real world calls.  Hopefully I can be up and running with this stuff, soon.

Buddy Johnson Orch./Ella Johnson vocals-"Since I fell for you" (1945)

The original and the best version.....IMHO.....can't hear this without thinking of my mom listening to the 78 on the big old blond Zenith Hi-Fi.... :)

Buddy Johnson Orchestra-Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball? (1949)

Well....we're coming up on baseball season....spring is in the air. I'm posting this one, though, because I'm getting ready to post a compilation of one of my all time favourite bands, with one of my top favourite vocalists...The Buddy Johnson Orchestra, with Ella Johnson. Been a fan for mostly my entire life....my mom had almost everything they recorded...78s...LPs....she was a huge fan of Ella's voice. Once you hear those unique pipes, you may be, too. Here's one preview before I post: Buddy and company doing "Did you see Jackie Robinson hit that ball?", a novelty recording from 1949.....more to come....stay tuned.

Bob Brozman "Ukulele Spaghetti" Live 1986 Philly Folk Festival

Bob Brozman, Takashi Hirayasu, and Djeli Moussa Diawara-Blues jam

Rare footage of incredible world blues artists Bob Brozman, Takashi Hirayasu (Okinawa, Japan), and Djeli Moussa Diawara (Guinea, West Africa) performing "African Blues" live in concert in Paris, France on May 9, 2000. Shot by: Paul Fisher; used with permission / all rights granted. This footage epitomizes the world blues music style that Bob Brozman has pioneered with internationally esteemed artists. Takashi Hirayasu plays the Sanshin. Djeli Moussa Diawara plays the Kora. Bob plays a National Reso-Phonic Tricone guitar. This concert was held in promotion of Bob and Djeli's release "Ocean Blues" and Bob and Takashi's release "Jin Jin."

1981 Bob Brozman "Blue Hula Stomp"

Ahhhhh.....Bob Brozman, a favourite for years. I didn't even know what album to post...I enjoy his entire body of work. That being the case, I've decided to post his first, released in 1981, on the Kicking Mule label.
What to say....hmmmm...Brozman is a guitar genius....also a linguist, anthropologist, and ethnomusicologist.
He performs in a number of styles such as blues Gypsy jazz,  calypso, ragtime, Hawaiian and Caribbean music, also regularly collaborating with musicians from such diverse cultural backgrounds as India, Africa, Japan, and New Guinea. He has been called "an instrumental wizard" and "a walking archive of 20th Century American music." He has recorded numerous albums and has won the Guitar Player Readers' Poll two years in a row in both the blues and slide guitar categories.  He is also well known for his use of National resonator instruments from the 1920s and 1930s....round and square neck guitar, and ukulele. A true master of the slide guitar....just blisteringly amazing playing. Not much more to say about him....just that the album is an amazing collection of  styles...Hawaiian, blues, jazz...some originals, also. I'll steal his own words from the liner notes:
"The music on this record is intended as a tribute to the manifold outpourings of the recording artists of the 1920s. I tend to overlap styles in a way that wasn't common back then, in order to get new music that still remains true to the old sounds. I use National resonator instruments because I have been fascinated and totally absorbed by their sound and response for over a decade; they are simply the most exciting acoustic instruments I've ever played."

I agree. I owned a National tri-cone square neck for a few years. It was one of the most unusual playing and excellent sounding instruments I've ever played. I had owned an early Gibson and an Oahu electric lap steel prior to it.....they were great to play, but the National was so much more versatile, adapting itself to so many tunings and different styles....just an amazing instrument to play.

Give this a try.....if you aren't familiar with his work, you might like it.....as I've said, he's been a big fave for years....I hope y'all enjoy it. I'm gonna post some of his later work in the upcoming weeks, including some of his collaborative efforts in world music......enjoy!

1957...Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section....

A bonus download for Thursday: The classic 1957 recording of "Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section", by  jazz alto saxophonist, Art Pepper. This is one of my favourite albums that he recorded, and generally thought of as one of his best releases of the '50s.  Miles Davis was playing on the West Coast, & Les Koenig set up this date in which Pepper sits in with Davis's rhythm section (Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums). Famously, Koenig & Pepper's wife Diane kept the date a secret from Pepper until the morning of the session, fearing that he'd be too nervous to agree to do the date (Art was seriously bad with his heroin addiction at the time, and hadn't played is sax in months...in his autobiography, Pepper states that his horn and reeds were in serious disrepair, and he had to go get his fix on to even make the date to record). I've always thought that his just letting go and winging it made this album work....of any of his releases, this is still one that I go to first....it just clicks and swings hard for me.....enjoy.

The David Grisman Quintet 1977....

1977....The David Grisman Quintet....David Grisman, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Rob Wasserman. This is the LP that took me from earth to space. I had known the mandolin as a student....my great Aunt had given me her Gibson F-5 that she had played for many years in several Kalamazoo, Michigan classical mandolin quartets connected to the Gibson factory.  I loved playing, but I hadn't yet broadened my horizons beyond classical arrangements. I knew about bluegrass and folk, but it hadn't gotten it's hooks into me, yet. For years, I'd been listening to Django Reinhardt, Stephan Grappelli and the Quintet du Hot Club de France, Stuff Smith, Claude Williams, and Joe Venuti. I had access to all that through my parents vast collection of 78s and LPs. I loved all of that, but I still didn't get the connection..this LP made the connection....acoustic jazz...bluegrass. Genius...it was like hearing the speed metal of acoustic music when I first listened to this LP. This CD is new to me every time I hear it. It still stops me dead in my tracks and blows my mind. Here it is....I hope you groove to it like I do.....enjoy!

Here's the link:

Here's the list of tunes:

E.M.D
Swing 51
Opus 57
Blue Midnight
Pneumonia
Minor Swing
Fish Scale
16-16
Richochet
Dawg's Rag

A live video from the David Grisman Quintet.....mind blowing. A preview of the 1977 LP, to be posted soon.

When this LP came out in 1977, it literally removed my head...scrambled it up and then replaced it...seriously. I was coming from a background in classical Mandolin, and just getting into jazz and bluegrass. David Grisman, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor and Rob Wasserman were like nothing I'd heard before. I still love it. I'll be posting the CD in a bit, with more notes.....meanwhile....enjoy!

Barberella's SHIT LIST!!!! I'm PMSing on Good Friday, so I apologize in advance...

The "Songs for the heinous bitch who doesn't pick up her bitch's shit" list..... >;D

I just have to vent here on Good Friday. I apologize. I own a dog, I'm sure many of you do, too. Dogs shit...fact of life. Dog shit=many plastic baggies. I know I look like a complete tool with a huge pocket bulging with plastic, plastic wrapped around my fat little hand, scooping around on the ground trying to catch the steaming offering to the dietary fiber gods, just as soon as it slides out of the ass of my adorable little four-legged vet bill.....dogs shit...and, yes, even if you look like a tool, swinging around a hot, steaming little baggy full of Hershey's kisses...you do it...you do it because THAT'S WHAT YOU F*CKING DO AS A DOG OWNER!! Now you know how every Spring, when the snow melts...the world around you briefly resembles a landmine strewn Afghan desert.....little shit bombs waiting everywhere....just for you to track into car, so you can have some healthy aromatherapy waft up from the floor mats on your morning commute. I know there's a hell of a lot of folks who obviously don't want to stick their baggy covered hand into a rapidly melting pile of snow, digging around for a steaming hot turd. I'm sure it's much easier to just cover it up with a foot full of snowy whiteness and just go on your merry way....whatever. CSI isn't gonna come around in the Spring and match the DNA in the turd back to your dog and bust you....it's not like matching the grooves on a spent bullet to the grooves in a gun barrel....so be it....whatever. Not cool...but not blatant, right?  Soooo, obviously I have a point to make with this longwinded, endless rant. BLATANT SHAMELESS SHITTERS. Yup. Shameless, not blameless. There is this ghetto bitch from hell in my neighborhood....Oh, yeah...ghetto as ghetto can possibly be. G-H-E-T-T-Ooooooo! Did I say ghetto? fine, I'll say it again...ghetto. She owns a dog...she walks the dog....she's TOO DAMN GOOD TO PICK HER DOG SHIT UP! Obviously picking up after your dog is for stupid-ass tools like the rest of us. She doesn't just let the dog shit everywhere....she's blatant about doing it right on your lawn, right on the sidewalk, right on the kids' playground. Hated and pointed out by the other dog owners....reviled by neighbors....brawls have nearly occurred from folks getting in her face about it. I've even gotten drunk....collected every baggy I could find in the park garbage can....and snuck over and deposited them inside the the lobby door of her apartment at 3AM one morning (true, not one of my more shining moments...but sooo very worth it). Well.....today....I watch her dog dump a hot one on the playground, in front of everyone. Charming. Well, this longwinded tale ends well....really....one of the park moms yelled out at her...startled her dog...and dog pulled hard on the leash. She had a cell phone to her ear as usual. She got pulled off balance...her big fat, hot pink capri-covered ghetto bootay landed RIGHT IN HER DOG'S STEAMING ASS PILE and got dragged in it for about 3 feet, before she was able to get to her sandal covered pedicured feet and limp out of the park to go catch her precious little shit filled furry bundle of luv!! God.....I love you! God is great, and justice is a beautiful thing!! This list is for you hon....."Songs for the heinous bitch who walks her bitch". Oh, and for responsible dog owners who appreciate God's sense of humour.....enjoy!!

A request...for Holy Week: The Easter Triduum...Catholic hymns in Latin by Beth Neilsen Chapman

Thus begins Holy Week: The Easter Triduum

Our long journey to the font culminates in the Easter Triduum.  These three days draw us into the mystery of our salvation.  Whatever we are doing these days, these prayers and resources can help us be open to the graces the day offers.   Each morning, we can pause to acknowledge the meaning of the day ahead.  Each night, we can give thanks.

Even if we can't celebrate these days liturgically, we can reflect upon the symbols and rituals, and let the prayers of the liturgies draw us in.  All, that we might know the depth of the love being offered us, and power of the gift of life won for us.

I am posting this request for Catholic hymns.....this is a personal joy for me in being able to post this for her.  These hymns are a big part of my life as a Catholic, also.

Here is a link to an absolutely wonderful CD by Beth Neilsen Chapman from 2004, "Hymns".

Part One-- The best of Bettye: A career retrospective of Ms. Lavette (in 3 parts)

This week I'm highlighting the Queen, Ms. Bettye Lavette, with a 3 part retrospective, drawn from her albums, past and present. There are cuts released and unreleased, some singles, and some 'B' sides. This is not a complete discography, or anything like that...if you like this, you can find most of these albums. I hope you do. She's been a big favourite of mine for years. I am so glad she is finally getting the recognition she deserves for her amazing talent.

Here's the link to Part I.
