A little then and now taste of the upcoming 'Best of Bettye' list.....

Then.....1965. One of my favourite voices....the Muskegon born, Detroit, Michigan raised Betty Haskins....better known to you and I as none other than the Queen...Ms. Bettye Lavette, singing "Let me down easy".

Hmmm, since watching Big Star do "In the Street" made you think of "That '70s Show"......

Photographic proof that my mom and dad were actually Red and Kitty from "That '70s Show". When the show first aired, my brother called me.....and we both confirmed our suspicions...seriously...look like 'em, act like 'em....Yeah, my dad was in Korea, too....he is Red....no joke.

This one's for my homies in Flint.......

I know the arson/domestic terrorism going on for the last week in Flint is no laughing matter.....but here's a 'lil soundtrack for when y'all have to hose down the roof on your garage....being that there's no fire department to come put out the burning vacant home next door.......suckage....major suckage.....>>shakes head<<

The "Let's burn one and drive around in your older brother's 442" list....songs from a warm weekend night in the late '70/early '80s.....

OK....I had a request to post some of the songs you may have been listening to in the late '70s/early '80s, while you and your friends were driving around in your brother's car, after paying off some drunk outside Krifran's liquor store to buy you a 6-pack. You're on your way to Rollerworld....your stupid friend is trying to roll one in the front seat.....nothing but stems and seeds in the paper...all the bud landing on the floor mats. Your neighbor's cousin accidentally did two strips of blotter, not realizing how fresh it was, and is convinced that she saw Gene Simmons without makeup in the car you all just passed. Your other friend decided beer wasn't enough, and is emptying a bottle of MD 20/20...which means your life will be much shorter, once your brother sees the back seat of his car tomorrow. You're probably listening to "Flint's best Rock", on 105.5......party on Garth......this is a two part list. I'm only listing the titles, as I'm sure everyone knows these songs......

Happy 14th season South Park!!

Still one of the best Cartman moments of all time...... >;D

In honor of the 200th South Park episode....

Hmmm....now my little secret is out. I have an irrational fear of Celine Dion. Well, actually, not JUST Celine Dion...I can think of two more things that freak me out, (OK, MANY things freak me out...Republicans with comb-overs, Middle-aged German sex tourists..Velveeta..erectile dysfunction medication...Jews for Jesus...the list goes on...but, I digress..) the other two things that I'm willing to discuss outside of a therapist's office are.....Tom Cruise, and R. Kelly. (dead silence....pause...I have issues, k??)

In honor of the 14th season/200th episode of South Park....I think in the next day or so I'll be posting an incredibly random little set of South Park songs and sound clips. But, for now, right here , is a video combining South Park, R, Kelly, AND Tom Cruise...too bad Celine Dion wasn't in the episode...I don't know about you, but I sleep better knowing that Cruise and Kelly are trapped in a closet...... :D

Friday, March 26, 2010

Hey Canada, can we give Celine Dion back??? pretty please?? with sprinkles on top??

The only thing I could actually ever REALLY blame Canada for is....Celine Dion....lol. Nah, let's blame QUEBEC (which isn't really Canada, now, is it??) :D
I had to post this Kinsey Sicks vid, live from Quebec, simply because the second half of it explains very well how I feel about Ms. Dion.......enjoy!

Kinsey Sicks....DRAGapella...barbershop meets...Barbarella.....gotta love that.

Blame Canada!! (not really...I'm just on a South Park trip) Songs from Canadian Artists......

Blame Canada.....no, not really. Having so much family in Canada, I could hardly ever have anything against Canada....lol. I've just been on this South Park thing, lately. I was listening to all the songs from the series the other night, and was LMFAO at the song "Blame Canada"....soooo, me being me, I decided to throw together a little set of tunes by artists from Canada. No, not Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, kd Lang, Leonard Cohen, or Rush....the artists you usually think of when people talk about musicians from the Great White North....certainly NOT Celine Dion (I have an irrational dislike of Celine...maybe it's her Adam's Apple...whatever...THAT'S another novel for another time)....anywhooo....Canada....here are a few artists that maybe you didn't know were Canadian.....that said....here's the set....enjoy!

Here's the tunage:

Diana Krall (with Natalie Cole)-Better Than

Michael Buble (with Holly Palmer)-Down with Love
Another native of BC, Michael Buble, in the title track of the 2003 Renee Zellweger/Ewan McGregor comedy "Down with Love". The female singer heard here with Michael is the amazing, under-appreciated, Holly Palmer...who should be famous, but isn't. Someday I should devote a set to just her music....amazingly talented woman.

Alpha Yaya Diallo-Fissiriwaly
Alpha Yaya Diallo is a Juno Award winning guitarist and composer who is based in Vancouver.  Alpha hails from Guinea and incorporates its rich musical tradition into his original compositions....."Fissiriwaly"  kicks ass...gr8 tune.

Sarah Harmer-The Hideout
From Burlington, Ontario...Sarah Harmer is another very talented singer, you don't hear as much about as you should. Every thing I've heard from her I like. Give this a listen, maybe you will, too. from the 2000 CD, "You were here".

Remy Shand-The way I feel
From the 2002 Motown records CD, "The way I feel". Shand is from Winnipeg, MB. A multi talented R&B vocalist and instrumentalist.

Tegan & Sara-Call it off
The Calgary, Alberta based band led by identical twins Tegan Rain Quin,  and Sara Kiersten Quin. From the 2007 CD, "The Con".

Holly Cole-Jersey Girl
The Halifax, Nova Scotia born jazz singer is known for both her versatile and distinctive voice, and her adventurous repertoire, which spans such divergent genres as show tunes, rock, and country music. This song is from "Temptation", a tribute album to Tom Waits. It was released in 1995.

Justin Bieber-One less lonely girl
Oh, lord....what to say, what to say. Hmmm....the ADORABLE Justin Bieber. This song is on here, because my 12 year old daughter just lovvvves the Stratford,  Ontario born  Justin Bieber....lol!! This is from his 2009 debut CD, "My World".

Vanity 6-Nasty Girl
Ahaaa! you thought of Vanity 6 as being all Prince/Minneapolis-ish. No....Denise Katrina Matthews,   (AKA Vanity) is from Niagra Falls, Ontario....lol.

Daniel Lanois-Pour Ton Sourir
The  record producer, guitarist  and singer-songwriter is from Hull, Quebec. He has released a number of albums of his own work and has produced albums for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Dylan, Parachute Club, U2, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris,Willie Nelson, Scott Weiland, Sinéad O'Connor, Robbie Robertson, the Neville Brothers, Chris Whitley, Ron Sexsmith, Martha and the Muffins and Nash the Slash. This is from the 2001 CD, "Groundwork: Act To Reduce Hunger".

Jane Siberry (with Jam Nation)-Harmonix
From the 1993 release "Way Down Below Buffalo Hell". Ms. Siberry is a singer-songwriter from Toronto.

Feist-Sea Lion Woman (Chromeo Remix)
Leslie Feist is from Amherst, Nova Scotia. This is the Chromeo remix of the track "Sealion" from the Deluxe Edition 2nd disc bonus tracks of the 2007 CD, "The Reminder".

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Sound track-Blame Canada
Now, you know I couldn't do this set without the glorious "Blame Canada", from South Park!! Ooooo, enjoy!! (all in fun, tho).

Sarah Slean-Comfortably Numb
A cover  of Pink Floyd's "Comfortable Numb" from the "Pink Floyd Redux A New Music Experience" CD. The simply amazing singer/songwriter/painter/photographer/pianist, Sarah Slean is a native of Pickering, Ontario.

Deborah Cox-Did You Ever Love Me
I bet you didn't know that this R&B singer-songwriter and actress is from Toronto....now ya do. This is from her 5th release, "The Promise", in 2008.

Gino Vannelli-I Just Wanna Stop
A top 10 US hit for the Quebec born Vannelli, in 1978.

Nick Gilder-Hot Child in the city
Born in London, England, but raised in Vancouver, Nick Gilder had a #1 US hit with this song in 1978. I must admit that I totally HATED this song in Junior High School....it has, however, grown on me a tad bit over the years....lol.

So, here ya go....and, if you DON'T like the set....don't blame me.....BLAME CANADA!!! bwahahahaaaa!!

A little something from todays' list....Rufus Wainwright "April Fools"....

I've always said this was a ridiculous, over-the-top video...right...Rufus and the main female characters of Opera...all of them dying off in the video (hmm, was Rufus jealous about not being Cio-Cio San, or Carmen?? whatever) ...but, I still like this song....maybe in spite of the fact that Rufus Wainwright is singing it....lol....enjoy

April showers bring.....a little Spring set of tunes

Almost April showers...and some nice late March sunshine...

Ahhhh, Spring! It's on the way in....glimmers of it showing here in Chicago.  The nights are still cold, but it is getting warmer by the day. On that note...a little departure from the 1964 project. A little set of tunes for Spring....enjoy.

Here's the link:

http://www.4shared.com/file/247825028/265e736d/spring.html

Here's the tunage:

kd lang-I Dream Of Spring
From the 2008 Watershed CD. "These cold dark places, places I've been..In cold dark places, I dream of spring". OK, so it's a metaphor for bad relationships, but the chorus reminded me of Chicago this morning....brrrrrr.

Rufus Wainwright-April Fools
I am not a big fan of Rufus....I mean please, "Rufus does Judy at Carnegie Hall"? feh! I'll listen to Judy, thankuverymuch. Pity, because I adored his father's work...Loudon Wainwright III was an amazing songwriter. Well, not surprising, I suppose, because I always been less than of fan of his mother's work, Kate McGarrigle (Anna and Kate McGarrigle).  Well, One of of three ain't bad. This song, however, in spite of a ridiculous video, has been a favourite since its release in 1998.

Lanae' Hale-Spring again
"Please give me one more chance, And I know I don’t deserve this. But I swear I won’t forget...If you just let it be spring again". Not the biggest fan contemporary Christian songwriters/singers, but, I like her very personal lyrics and her voice.

Kurt Elling-April in Paris
From the 1997 CD, "The Messenger". IMHO, the Chicago singer is one of the best voices in jazz today. A very funky take on the old standard.

Perez Prado-Cherry Pink and apple blossom white
Ahhhh, the Cuban born "King of Mambo"......the 1955 cha-cha the held the #1 spot on the US charts for over 10 weeks. When I hear this I visualize Jane Russell dancing to it, in the movie, "Underwater" :D (not the worst visual, to be sure!).

Noah And The Whale-The first days of Spring
The title cut of the 2009 second CD from London's "Noah and the whale"

The Meters-The flower song
Choice instrumental from the 1972,  "Cabbage Alley". New Orleans' Meters first release on Reprise Records, after the three best known recordings on Josie records ("The Meters" 1969, "Look-Ka Py Py",1969, and "Struttin'", 1970.

Mady Mesplé/Danielle Millet-flower duet (lakme-Delibes)
"The Flower Duet" (Viens, Mallika, les lianes en fleurs... Sous le dôme épais), the duet, between  Lakmé and Mallika, from  Delibes’ 1883 Lakmé. This is the Orchestre du Theatre National de L'opera-Comique, recording, with Mady Mesplé, and Danielle Millet.
T.W. Sams-Springtime Blues
Recorded in the '50s for Johnny Otis' Dig label.

Sugarland-April Showers
From the 2006 CD, "Enjoy the ride". As always, Jennifer Nettles voice kicks my ass.

June Christy-Spring can really hang you up the most
From the 1958 LP "The Song is June". A favourite since childhood. I love the strange melancholy of these lyrics....

Charlie Parker-I'll remember April
From the 1950 Mercury LP "Bird with strings Vol. 2"

Diana Krall-A blossom fell
"A blossom fell from off a tree, It settled softly on the lips you turn to me. The gypsies say and I know why,  A falling blossom only touches lips that lie".....damn! could I get a bit morose, or what?? this is supposed to be spring!! From the 1996 Cd, "All For You (A Dedication To The Nat King Cole Trio)".

John Pizzarelli-It might as well be Spring
From the 1996 CD, "After Hours".

Prince-Sometimes it snows in April
From the 1986 Prince and The Revolution "Parade: Music from the Motion Picture Under the Cherry Moon". "Sometimes it snows in April, Sometimes I feel so bad, so bad Sometimes I wish life was never ending, and all good things, they say, never last"...yup, guess I'm staying on the melancholy Spring thang....lol.

Buddy Collette Quartet-It's April
1949 recording, by the West Coast sax player and his quartet.

Comedian Harmonists-Veronika, der Lenz ist da
The Comedian Harmonists were an internationally famous, all-male German close harmony ensemble that performed between 1927 and 1934 as one of the most successful musical groups in Europe before World War II. The group consisted of Harry Frommermann , Ari Leschnikoff, Erich Collin , Roman Cycowski , Robert Biberti , and Erwin Bootz. The group's success continued into the early 1930s, but eventually ran into trouble with the Nazi regime: three of the group members - Frommermann, Collin, and Cycowski - were either Jewish or of Jewish descent, and Bootz had married a Jewish woman. The Nazis progressively made the group's professional life more difficult, initially banning pieces by Jewish composers, and finally prohibiting them from performing in public. The group's last concert was in Munich on March 25, 1934. "Veronika, der Lenz ist da" is one of their best known songs, written by Walter Jurmann. It has been covered by countless artists to this day. It's a pretty risque lyric for the time....Spring...sex...love it.

Cassandra Wilson-Aguas De Marco (Waters of March)
"Águas de Março" is a Brazilian song composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. In 2001, "Águas de Março" was named as the all-time best Brazilian song in a poll of more than 200 Brazilian journalists, musicians and other artists conducted by Brazil's leading daily newspaper, Folha de São Paulo. This English version was on Cassandra Wilson's 2002 Blue Note CD "Belly of the Sun".

Anita O'Day /Cal Tjader-Spring will be a little late this year
From the amazing 1962 collaboration between Cal and Anita, "Time for two". Yeah, I KNOW I probably put a massive amount of Anita on my lists of tunes...lol....Oh, well....I guess being as huge a fan of hers as I have been for my entire life, I suppose I can always find a song of hers to fit almost any mood....prolly doesn't hurt that I have pretty much anything she ever recorded....lol.

Arcadia Peacock Orchestra Of St. Louis-Spring Has Come
A 1924 recording on Okeh Records.

Jessie Matthews-When You've Got A Little Springtime In Your Heart
A 1934 recording by the popular British dancer and singer, Jessie Matthews, from the Rodgers and Hart musical, Evergreen.

Janis Joplin-Flower in the sun
"Once in a green time a flower,  Oh, fell in love with the sun. The passion lasted for an hour...And then she wilted from her loved one" A previously unissued cut, included on the 1999 remaster of "Cheap Thrills", Big Brother & the Holding Company's 1968 major label debut.

Gillian Welch-April The 14th (Part 1)
From the 2001 release, "Time(The Revelator)".

Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra-April Showers
An October 27, 1921 recording of "April Showers", by the Whiteman band. This was a popular version, but the song became a massive hit, in 1922, for Al Jolson.

Here it is....a little departure into songs about Spring....kinda low key...but, I'm in that mood, this morning.....enjoy.

Soon to come: Part II of the 1964 list.

'Cuz Spring is on it's way...a little preview of an upcoming list....

My favourite "Spring" song....funny, risque...This is the chorus in German, with a rough translation:

Veronika, der Lenz ist da,
die Mädchen singen tralala.
Die ganze Welt ist wie verhext,
Veronika, der Spargel wächst!
Veronika, die Welt ist grün,
drum laßt uns in die Wälder ziehn.
Sogar der Großpapa sagt zu der Großmama:
"Veronika, der Lenz ist da,
Veronika, Veronika, der Lenz ist da!"

In English:

Veronika, it’s spring again,
The girlies sing their sweet refrain,
The whole wide world’s a lovers’ knot,
Oh asparagus, how big you’ve got!
My dear Veronika, the world is green,
Those woods would make a handy screen.
For even your old grandpa, says to your old grandma:
Veronika, it’s spring again!

The Comedian Harmonist's weren't singing about the asparagus in the garden ;) "Spring, and the young man's fancy turns to love, etc...." enjoy

Hey, I just passed 100 views!

KEWL! I just noticed that I passed the 100 mark for views/visits. That's so excellent! Thanks for all the feedback, and I do hope some of you have found some new tunes or old faves....

My little commentary on the passing of healthcare reform.....

Healthcare reform.....It's not what it could or should be....but, it's a beginning. This great duet, however, was EVERYTHING it could be and more....enjoy.

1964....part I

Without further ado....well some ado...being that the lonnng weekend of being in the St. Gertrude production of the Spring musical is over and done for the year (and a big THANKS to all who came and saw it!).....drumroll......

1964........ MCMLXIV. This is a list for all the folks who'll be turning 46 this year...or for that matter, anyone who either was around back then, or just likes the idea of hearing a few songs that aren't on the usual Billboard CDs that have the greatest hits of that year. (You can get the Billboard "Top 100" CDs easily...although, if you like these sets that I post, and want the known hits...I can easily post them...just ask). Most folks think of '64 as the year of the "British Invasion"...the Beatles 1st album, the Rolling Stones, The Who, etc...but, overall, there was a lot of interesting music that came out that year in addition to just the English groups. This is going to be on a couple links, (4, actually) as I've compiled a lot of songs. Some artists you'll know...some might not be familiar to most of you. It took awhile to find most of these, and I hope you'll like it. As always, I'm taking requests for lists to post. I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions that I'm getting on this undertaking, as its' still pretty new, and I'm just getting a feeling on how to proceed. Remember, I have a LOT of music, and access to even more....let me know what you're looking for....I can post it for you. Thanks, again!

Now....onto to the first list of 1964: Part I

The link:

http://www.4shared.com/file/246826713/2b2c4bf9/1964.html

The tunes:

Eric Dolphy-Hat and beard
Eric Dolphy passed away in 1964, this is from his last major release "Out to lunch", being avant guard jazz, it's a tad out of place in this mix....but, jazz being my biggest love...I couldn't not put it in....
The Everly Brothers-Gone, gone, gone
I was reminded how much I've always loved this song, recently, when Robert Plant and Alison Krauss did a cover of it for their "Raising Sand" CD.....one of the Bros. best, IMHO....
The Honeycombs-Have I the right
The Honeycombs were an English beat/pop  group, founded in 1963 in North London. This was their one chart-topping  hit.  After that song the interest in the group ebbed away, and they split up in late 1966. The group's most distinguishing mark was their female drummer, Honey Lantree.
The Ventures-Cruel sea
Not one you hear too often from the Ventures. Excellent instrumental surf music....The 'B' side of "Walk don't run '64".
Dave Berry & the Cruisers-The crying game
Most folks know this song from the 1992 movie.....Berry was popular in Britain and Continental Europe.  The Cruisers at that time of this recording were made up of John Fleet, Roy Barber, Frank Miles, and Kenny Slade (drums). The cruisers had other lineups, later, and Berry used session guitarists extensively, including Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Big Jim Sullivan.
Eden Kane-Boys cry
Richard Sarstedt AKA Eden Kane, is known these days for his work as an actor and performer on several of the Star Trek series. In the early '60s he was known as Eden Kane, and went to #8 on the UK charts with this song.
The Pretty Things-Don't bring me down
A #10 Uk chart hit for the London based group. The Pretty Things were preceded by Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys, which consisted of Dick Taylor, Keith Richards, and Mick Jagger. When Brian Jones joined the band on guitar, Taylor was pushed from guitar to bass and the band changed its name to the Rollin' Stones. The Pretty Things consisted of Taylor, Phil May,  Brian Pendleton, John Stax, and Pete Kitson.
Marianne Faithfull-As tears go by
Well, while we're on the Rolling Stones bit, I include the Faithfull version of the Jagger/Richards "As tears go by".
Tony Sheridan/Beatles-Ain't she sweet
OK, many of you have heard this one.  It was recorded on June 23, 1961 at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle, Hamburg, Germany with Pete Best on drums, and Bernard Purdie for drum overdubs, and was, released in 1964,  on Polydor Records. "Ain't She Sweet" was an American  album featuring four tracks recorded  by The Beatles featuring Tony Sheridan (except for the t his song with vocal by John Lennon) and cover versions of Beatles and British Invasion-era songs recorded by the Swallows.
The Mojos-Everythings' alright
The only top 10 charting hit for this Liverpool based beat group.
The Singing Nun-Dominique
You all know this one. I included it for personal reasons. It brings back some excellent memories of my mom teaching it, and translating it to me as a very young kid.
The Pixies Three-Birthday party
The Hanover, Pennsylvania trio of Midge Bollinger, Kaye McCool, and Debra Swisher (high vocals) had a regional and top 40 hit with this release on Mercury Records.
John Lee Hooker-Dimples
Originally recorded in 1956, but this is from the 1964 release, "On Campus", on VeeJay records. This went on to be a pretty big UK jukebox hit in '64.
The Fleetwoods-Before and After
A later release for the Fleetwoods, known mostly for "Come softly to me", from 1959.
Tommy Roe-Come On
A '64 #36 chart reaching hit, for the singer later known for the 1969 #1, "Dizzy".
Tony Jackson and the Vibrations- Bye Bye Baby
An English  bass guitar player and singer who was a former member of The Searchers. This song sounds suspiciously like the Isley Brothers "Shout", IMHO.....
The Honeys-He's a doll
The Honeys, Marilyn and Diane Rovell, and their cousin Ginger Blake, were a kind of female counterpart to the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson was the producer and songwriter of this tune...and later husband of Marilyn.
Downliners Sect-Baby, what's wrong
The British rhythm and blues band's first single from '64.
Ella Fitzgerald-Can't buy me love
Tons of people covered the Beatles in the '60s....most sucked, IMHO. This is a fun cover by Ella.....
Sam Cooke-Good Times
#1 on Cash Box/#11 on BillBoard, this song has been covered by everyone from Aretha to the Grateful Dead.
The Everly Brothers-Ferris wheel
Another excellent 1964 release from the Bros. Everly.
Roger Miller-Chug-a-lug
I still love this song! The song reached #9 on the U.S. charts in the same year, becoming his second pop hit.
Ricky Nelson-For you
I've always been a fan....but this song has always been a fave....nice....dig that Farfisa organ!
Joe Hinton-Funny
He began as a gospel singer with the Chosen Gospel Quartet and the Spirit of Memphis Quartet. Producer Don Robey asked the singer to try doing secular tunes, and Hinton began recording for Peacock Records, in 1958. This is his biggest hit, a cover of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away".
Gene Simmons-Haunted House
Gene Simmons (not the Kiss guy) had a number 11 hit in 1964 with this novelty tune.

Well, here's VOL. I of 1964......hope y'all like it....look for more to come.

From the first part of 1964 list number One.....

I'll have the first of the 4 part 1964 list up today.....here's a preview. The Ventures' "Cruel Sea"...enjoy

Saturday, March 20, 2010

A little delay on the upcoming list....

A little delay on the upcoming 1964 list....My apologies.

I'm preparing a list of tunes from 1964, as we speak. I'm a tad delayed, as I'm trying to get through this weekend...busy, busy....The list will consist of tunes from the year 1964....my birth year. I wanted to start doing a few year lists, and figured that '64 was a good place to start...lol. This won't be a list of typical Billboard charting hits....you can get those anywhere. I'm gonna post one that consists of one-hit wonders, songs but known artists that you don't hear often, and tunes that charted in the UK and other places outside of the US. It hops quite a few genres, and the only real criteria is that it was released in '64.

Looking forward to getting this large, unusual list up....have a great weekend!

Another preview of the upcoming 1964 list....

Probably one of my all time favourite songs....Elvis' cover was OK...but come no where near Terry Stafford's original....

A preview of the Friday list....1964....a selected list of songs from that year..

Sorry, this is the ONLY real version of Tainted Love....the Gloria Jones version. Never did chart in 1964, but, IMHO, one of the best songs of that year.

The "Audacity of huge" mix.....a big mix of "heavy" hittin' tunage......

Sit back....grab a slice......some Ben and Jerrys Chubby Hubby, a DIET Coke.....get your grub on and have a listen....**belch**

And now....a mix with curves in ALL THE RIGHT PLACES........

Here's the link:

http://www.4shared.com/file/242655050/bdd6ff5f/fat.html

Here's the tonnage of tunage:

k.d. Lang & The Reclines-Big Boned Gal
This is for all the big boned gals...from Southern Alberta down through all the lower 48....Ahhh, hell...its for all the big boned gals every-damn-where! From the kd Lang and the Reclines 1989 CD, "Absolute Torch and Twang"....Nashville may have never appreciated the big 'ole butch Canadian with the voice of an angel, but I sure did. She never got the respect she deserved for the Owen Bradley produced "Shadowland", IMHO. Some of her later songs have been OK (well, "hymns of the 49th parallel" was and is an amazing collection of tunes) ...but this is still one the best of her earlier CDs, methinks.

Fats Domino-The Fat Man
Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino first attracted national attention with this recording, back in 1949 and released on Imperial Records. This song is an early rock and roll record, featuring  rolling piano and  "wah-wah" vocalizing over a fat back beat. It sold over a million copies and is widely regarded as the first rock and roll record to do so. "They call me the fat man....Cause I weight two hundred pounds.  All the girls they love me..Cause I know my way around".....BoooYA!

Roy Milton and his Solid Senders-Big Fat Mama
"I wanna mama big and round...who can really go to town" Released in 1947....Specialty Records #518, with the Camille Howard hit "Thrill Me" on the flip side.

Big Mama Thornton-They call me big mama
The 1953 'B' side of "Hound Dog"....yeah, THAT "Hound Dog" (her version trumped the later watered-down Elvis version).  "Well, they call me big mama 'cuz I weigh three hundred pounds..Well, they call me big mama 'cuz I weigh three hundred pounds..I can rock and I can roll and I can really go to town" (yeah, like I'd argue that with a girl who's 300lbs...lol.....I'd be prayin' to GOD...please lemme b on top, tho) ;0

Curtis Mayfield-Big Mac
Excellent Curtis Mayfield instrumental from the sound track of "Let's do it again", the 1975 film starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby. Hmmmm.....just sayin'....Big Mac....you thinkin' about a food break, yet? don't look at me....Big Mac-less, here....I'm the world's fattest VEGAN...lol....seriously.

Chubby Newsome-Hip Shakin' Mama
A 1949 New Orleans hit on the  DeLuxe label, recorded with Paul Gayten's band. "Ooooo, I'm goin up on the mountain, to face the rising sun....if I find anything good I'm gonna bring my good man some..."

Bull Moose Jackson-I want a bowlegged woman
Mr.  Big 10inch's 1948 double-sided hit "All My Love Belongs to You" / "I Want a Bowlegged Woman". I LOVE these lyrics!  "I wanna bowlegged woman, that's all, I wanna bowlegged woman that's tall...I'll fall in love with her right from the start...'cuz her big fat legs are soooo far apart"!!

Carl Matthews-Big Man
An excellent 1954 hit that straddles that narrow (narrow? ain't nothin' narrow in this set!!) gap between R&B and early rock. Gr8 stuff!

The Rockets-Big Leg Mama
by Vann Walls And The Rockets' "Open The Door"/"Big Leg Mama", was released on Atlantic Records in 1953. Another excellent tune praising the attributes of the proverbial big leg gal.....praise on!

Jimmy Witherspoon-Big fine girl
One of the blues shouters' first big hits from 1950. This is live, with Jay McShann's band, and is totally kickin' butt.

Hawks-He`s The Fat Man
Another '50s offering from the Crescent City vocal group. "Some call me fat, some call me stout, but I got the love all the women brags about"........

Simian Mobile Disco-Audacity Of Huge (ft. Chris Keating)
Fine....so its not "huge" in the sense of the rest of the list.....I'm just digging on that title, k? Another heavily stylized track from the UKs Simian Mobile Disco, an English  production and remix team, consisting of  James Ford and Jas Shaw and Simon Everett.

Paul (Georgia Boy) Kimble-That Big Fat Mama
"I see a big fat mama....strollin' with a 'lil skinny man...oh she looks so good, strollin' in front of my bandstand". '50s bluesy R&B/rock 'n roll....

Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys-Fat Boy Rag
The boys during their Tiffany Transcriptions era best ('46-'47), with excellent interplay between  Lester "Junior" Barnard on guitar, and Herb Remington's steel....nice stuff.

Harry Crafton-Roly Poly Mama
Love it! The 1949 hit, "Roly Poly Mama"....raunchy! :D "I gotta roly poly mama, with her meat rockin' on the bone....and every time she wobbles, a skinny girl lose her home".

Bill Jennings-Big Boy
A massively blistering track from Bill Jennings, who was the guitar genius for the Bill Doggett Combo during the 1950s.

Wynonie Harris-Lolly Pop Mama
Hot Damn! "Got a big fat mama, she calls me her lolly pop...when she starts to love me, she never knows when to stop".  "Mr. Blues," had some of the best lyrics, and the baddest bands of the mid '40s-early '50s.....love it!

King Bennie Nawahi-Big Feet Rag
One of the few Hawaiian guitarists during the 1920's and 1930's who could be considered a legitimate contender to the title of "King of the Hawaiian Guitar"...good stuff!..nah, its not just about the fatness....its about the big feetness, too....fun!

George Jones-Roly Poly
I was tempted to post the original version of Roly Poly, by Bob Wills and company, but this cover by George Jones is from the "Sings Bob Wills" LP, from 1962. Oooooo...daddies' 'lil fatty!!!

Louis Jordan-I like 'em fat like that
Let the cats all criticize, Joke about my baby's size; She's reet with me Because you see:
I like 'em fat like that......one of Louis Jordan And His Tympany Five's best...from 1947.

Johnny Dodds-Piggly Wiggly
a New Orleans based jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist, best known for his recordings under his own name and with bands such as those of Joe "King" Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Lovie Austin and Louis Armstrong. Dodds was also the older brother of drummer Warren "Baby" Dodds. This was a side recorded with the Beale Street Washboard Band.

Mika-Big Girl (you are beautiful)

"You take your girl, And multiply her by four...Now a whole lot of woman needs a whole lot more". Now, I'm not the world's biggest Mika fan, mind you, but, damn....I couldn't do a set glorifying the rubenesque without adding this track.....puhleese!!

Joe Tex-Skinny legs and all
........"And don't you worry about a doggone thing a'tall, because there's
some man, somewhere, who'll take you baby, skinny legs and all"

'NUFF SED!!! ENJOY!!!!

Hey, you......are you gonna leave that chip bag on the damn floor??? what do I look like, your maid???

Another 'lil taste of tomorrows' list.....

........"And don't you worry about a doggone thing a'tall, because there's
some man, somewhere, who'll take you baby, skinny legs and all" :D

Cuz it's always Fat Tuesday in my 'lil corner of the world....

This is just a little preview of tomorrow's BIG PHAT LIST......Waddling Wednesday...a big 'ol hefty set of tunes for us horizontally impaired folks.....

It's Marty Robbins singing the old Bob WIlls and the Texas Playboys classic, "Roly Poly" (daddies' little fatty)

ENJOY!!

Just had to plug an excellent site.....

http://www.halfhearteddude.com/

Check out his site....I've been going here for awhile, and I never leave disappointed....always some great tunes and commentary....you'll enjoy the visit.

Cows....cowboys...cowgirls....meat....tunes for Tuesday....!!

Cows.....yeah. I made time for songs about chickens....I'm now giving equal time to our bovine buddies.  Hmmmm....nah, these tunes mostly just have cow in the title...This is the cows, cowboys/girls and beef mix.....have a listen.

Here's the link:

http://www.4shared.com/file/241887621/d866526b/cows.html

Here's the tunage:

Steely Dan-Black Cow
"I can't cry anymore, while you run around. Break away, just when it seems so clear. That's it....over now....drink your big Black Cow, and get out of here"  Yeah, so its "cow" in the title only...artistic license? prolly :) An ode to being totally over someone's substance abuse,  from the 1977 Steely Dan LP, "Aja".

Camper Van Beethoven-Cowboys from Hollywood
"Aren't y'all cowboys from Hollywood"?  From what I think was Camper Van Beethoven's best album, the 2nd one, from 1986, "II & III". If you're a fan of Cracker, you'll prolly like this CD.....Combining bits of ska, country, tex-mex, and 60’s psychedelia, this "surrealist absurdist folk’, stomps along and grows on you.

Bob Wills-Cowboy Stomp
A western swing classic, recorded in 1941, for Columbia Records, by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Aiyyy! scary memories of my mom showing me how to Lindy Hop and 2 step to western swing in the kitchen, as a kid....but I digress.....not a visual you need at lunchtime....

Humble Pie-Buttermilk Boy
From the 1969 Humble Pie "As Safe As Yesterday", their debut album,  which peaked at number 16 on the UK charts. Featuring  Steve Marriott, Peter Frampton, Greg Ridley, Jerry Shirley, and Lyn Dobson.  Not remotely about cows or whatever....lol....I was just in the mood for it. :D

Tony Joe White-Run with the bulls
A gr8 instrumental, from the Louisiana-born  singer/songwriter/guitarist  best known for his 1969 hit  "Polk Salad Annie", and "Rainy Night in Georgia".  I think his skills as a guitarist are sadly underrated, this version is from the 2008 CD, "Deep Cuts".

Ella Fitzgerald & The Ink Spots-Cow-Cow Boogie (Cuma-Ti-Yi-Ti-Ay)
Still my most favourite version of this song, released in 1944 on Decca Records....not outdated, swingingly excellent.....Ella at her ass-kicking vocal best, with Orville "Hoppy" Jones, Ivory "Deek" Watson, Jerry Daniels, and Charlie Fuqua.....the Ink Spots.

The Swallows-It Ain't the Meat
Yeah, like this is about cows, either....lol. ....I suppose it depends on the heffa that the Swallows are referring to.....A 1951 R&B chart hit from the Baltimore based "Swallows".

Rosco Gordon-Saddled the cow
Another 1951 R&B chart hit from the Memphis based Gordon, his very distinctive piano style is referred to as the  'The Rosco Rhythm', known for its accent on the off beat, and is often cited as one of the foundations of Jamaican Bluebeat and Reggae. He made a number of his early recordings for Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Unusual tune.

Johnnie Lee Wills-Milk Cow Blues
Bob Wills' little brother. A popular band leader and fiddler, himself, this is a 1940s recording of Johnnie Lee Wills and his boys signature tune "Milk Cow blues".

The Psychedelic Furs-Here come cowboys
From  The Psychedelic Furs fourth album, "Mirror Moves", released in 1984.

Reece Shipley & The Rainbow Valley Boys-Milk bucket boogie
A 1952 Swingbilly classic, complete with the sound effect of cows being milked....wooot! (I can't say I've ever heard the particular sound in a song......)

The Swift Jewel Cowboys-My untrue cowgirl
A 1939 cut ....not something you hear too often....enjoy.

Hal Singer-Beef Stew
An instrumental 1949 R&B hit for Harold Joseph "Hal" Singer, the Tulsa born
jazz bandleader  and saxophonist.....smokin' hot tune.

Imani Coppola-Legend of a Cowgirl
Tooo fun. That lyric sez it all.....actually, I think its the sample of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" that weaves through this whole song that has always done it for me....

Tanya Tucker-Somebody Buy This Cowgirl a Beer [live]
A live cut from Ms. Tucker.....serve it up, 'cuz cowgirls need a cold one, too. From the 1982 release, "Live".

The Intruders-Cowboys to girls
The excellent 1968 release from the Intruders.....fun.

Ricky Nelson-Milk Cow Blues
The 'B' side of the 1960 Imperial 45, "You are the only one". I always preferred this version to the 'A' side.....very cool version, IMHO.....

Elton John-Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
I totally love and respect everything that Sir Elton recorded up to about 1975, when "Captain" was recorded. I really can't tolerate anything released after "Rock of the Westies", also from '75.....gr8 tune, gr8 LP, IMHO.....

Cliff Edwards-Ragtime Cowboy Joe
Dude, its Jiminny Cricket!! well, the VOICE of Jiminny Cricket, from Disney's Pinochio. This is from an old Ukelele Ike/Cliff Edwards 78.....

David Crosby-Cowboy Movie
From the totally underrated David Crosby solo LP from 1969, "If I could only remember my name", featuring contributions by Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, along with members of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Santana.

Cracker-Sinaloa cowboys
A Cracker cover of the Bruce Springsteen tune, "Sinaloa Cowboys".

Frank Zappa-Latex Solar Beef
"All groupies must bow down.....In the sacred presence of the Latex Solar Beef"!! 'nuff said....ZAPPA.... :D (from Fillmore East, june 1971).

Funkadelic-Lunchmeataphobia (Think, It Ain't Illegal Yet!)
From the 1978 "One Nation Under a Groove" LP......ass kicking guitar from Michael Hampton...Mmmmmmmm.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse-Cowgirl in the Sand
From the 1969 "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" LP.

Rickie Lee Jones-Flying Cowboys
From the 1989 album of the same name. I think this was one of her best releases....nothing on it that I don't like....

Nat King Cole Trio-Save the bones for Henry Jones (cause Henry don't eat no meat)
Oh hell yeah.....a favourite! The trio in about 1947, with Johnny Mercer....excellent!

Slim Gaillard-Ferdinand The Bull
It wouldn't be a list without a 'lil something from the Slim Gaillard Trio....lol. Yes, its THAT Ferdinand the Bull, from the story you remember as a kid.....

Louis Jordan-You're my meat
Fat and Forty, but Lordy, Lordy you're my meat......nah....can't say this is about cows...just heffas.... ;) I just had to add this favourite ;)

Have fun with this list.....I did.....enjoy!

And now......equal time for "vegetarians"....lol ;)

I  included the Nat King Cole Trio version from 1947 on today's list, but here is a '50s version with Nat and Johnny Mercer (in honor of last year's centenary observance of Mercer's 1909 birth). Enjoy!

Equal time for cows....a preview of today's list....

Ahhh, the cows have spoken....lol. Anyhow....being that today's list is songs with cow in the title, this is Dorothy Dandridge's version of "Cow Cow Boogie". I put the Ella Fitzgerald/Ink Spots version on today's list, so I thought I'd post this vid of Dorothy's version as a preview of coming attractions.....enjoy!

An alternative St. Patricks day mix......

It's almost St. Patricks Day. Having played and listened to a lot of Celtic music over the years, I'm not a huge fan of the usual offerings that get posted every year.....Crinkly old men in fisherman sweaters and Donegal caps bleating going on and on about unicorns and whiskey on Sunday, or, God forbid St. Bono and the 3 apostles bleating on and on about.....well...ANYTHING. Soooo, on that note, here is a slightly low key, St. Pats pan-celtic (not just Irish) alternative mix:

The link:

Hope you enjoy this little mix.....I wanted to put together some enjoyable listening that differs a tad bit from the usual St Pats mixes, and throws a few curve balls atcha....enjoy!

Some Karen Casey as a pre-St. Pats appetizer.....

And the lyric, from the provocative Ewan Macoll classic:

In the morning we built the city
In the afternoon walked through its streets
Evening saw us leaving

We wandered through our days as if they would never end
All of us imagined we had endless time to spend
We hardly saw the crossroads and small attention gave
To landmarks on the journey from the cradle to the grave,
cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave

Did you learn to dream in the morning?
Abandon dreams in the afternoon?
Wait without hope in the evening?

Did you stand there in the traces and let 'em feed you lies?
Did you trail along behind them wearing blinkers on your eyes?
Did you kiss the foot that kicked you, did you thank them for
their scorn?
Did you ask for their forgiveness for the act of being born,
act of being born, act of being born?

Did you alter the face of the city?
Make any change in the world you found?
Or did you observe all the warnings?

Did you read the trespass notices, did you keep off the grass?
Did you shuffle up the pavements just to let your betters pass?
Did you learn to keep your mouth shut, were you seen but never heard?
Did you learn to be obedient and jump to at a word,
jump to at a word, jump to at a word?

Did you demand any answers?
The who and the what and the reason why?
Did you ever question the setup?

Did you stand aside and let 'em choose while you took second best?
Did you let 'em skim the cream off and give to you the rest?
Did you settle for the shoddy and did you think it right
To let 'em rob you right and left and never make a fight,
never make a fight, never make a fight?

What did you learn in the morning?
How much did you know in the afternoon?
Were you content in the evening?

Did they teach you how to question when you were at the school?
Did the factory help you, were you the maker or the tool?
Did the place where you were living enrich your life and then
Did you reach some understanding of all your fellow men,
all your fellow men, all your fellow men?

Ouch....nothing says it better than that.....Enjoy....-Barberella

The "Touch my coffee and I'll KEEEEL you!!!" mix for Monday.....

Ok....so it's Monday, and the chickens have spoken. I'm needing caffeine, having just stayed up and watched a playback of Michigan State totally OWNING University of Michigan, 64-48.....I do need to say that again 64-48. There, had to say that again! (gleefully wicked chuckle....) I had just come home from a dreadful park district basketball game that my daughter played in....so watching the Spartan's game was pretty necessary for my morale. Yeah....my kid didn't want to talk about it....they REALLY lost , with a score of 0-2. (Hell, in my universe...BOTH teams lost with a score that bad...). Hey, I suppose the other team won by only one basket..... :0

So, having said that....coffee...caffeine...java...Tea (hey, it has caffeine!) a selection of songs about coffee and tea: The "Touch my coffee and I'll KEEEEL you!!!" mix:

Anita O'Day-Tea for Two
The definitive version (well, other than from "Jazz on a Summers' day-Newport Jazz Fest '58" DVD) this version is from the Live at Mr. Kellys-Chicago LP.
Prince-Starfish and coffee
"Starfish and coffee, maple syrup and jam Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine, and a side order of ham If U set your mind free, baby, maybe U'd understand Starfish and coffee, maple syrup and jam" Omg...I still totally groove 2 this song!! never gets old for me.....

Dude, we've all had days like this....Ella woulda dumped him if she'd been on Adderal, as opposed to coffee, IMHO....
Hank Ballard and the Midnighters-The Coffee Grind
Ok, so this one's a stretch....basically it's a sexual double entendre...but, hey....I haven't caffienated enough yet, so it's a ode to the vintage Osterizer that serves as the grinder of my beans....deal with it. ;)
Leiber-Stoller Orchestra-Cafe Espresso
For those who like cheese with their coffee.....Sanka and Velveeta...whatever...
Marianne Faithfull-Black Coffee

Nat King Cole Trio-You're the cream in my coffee
Yet another excellent version of the standard
